PFW Aerospace has been supplying metal tubing to the aerospace industry for nearly 100 years. Given the increasing demands to reduce weight, we needed to identify alternatives to metal. Metaldyne and Victrex have been working quite closely for the past nine years designing and developing gearing applications for balance shaft and balance shaft modules in three- and four-cylinder internal combustion engines. These benefits, in conjunction with noise vibration and harshness (NVH) improvements, have provided our customer base with a viable alternative to traditional metal gear designs in balance shaft and balance shaft module applications. Victrex’s support in the design and development process has been critical to the advancement of this technology.
We have processed VICTREX PAEK high performance polymers with our Husky hot runners and controllers and have achieved great results. With proper moulding guidelines in place, we are able to run a very consistent process to produce parts with exceptional mechanical properties and cosmetic appearance. Furthermore, we did not have any thermal degradation issues which can often be a problem when using some other engineering resins.
By working together, we have proven that utilising our hot runner systems and controller to mold VICTREX PAEK parts can reduce waste by 50-80%. This innovative, eco-friendly solution means significant cost savings for our customers.
Cook Compression has used VICTREX PEEK exclusively for more than 20 years in our Manley™ and MOPPET™ compressor valves because of its high quality and consistent performance both in the field and in injection moulding presses. Since we are able to formulate high-quality VICTREX PEEK resin with other polymers and additives, we can further improve or incorporate certain desired characteristics for our customer’s end-use applications. We have at least seven specially-formulated blends that we are currently applying and the number continues to grow as we find new applications and develop new formulations to meet our customer’s needs.
