Solution-oriented and value-added applications will be showcased by Victrex at this year’s Chinaplas in April. The world’s leading PAEK manufacturer with its own technology centre and sales office in Shanghai is focusing on efficiency, durability and lightweight construction in the automotive and aviation industries, but also on tailor-made applications for the electronics industry. The newly designed exhibition stand skilfully picks up the company’s logo and guides visitors through the overarching “From Challenge to Benefit” slogan. The company’s offering will be accompanied by two technical seminars on the third day of the fair.

Implementing demanding applications and thus meeting rising customer requirements is one of Victrex’s specialities. The PAEK polymers manufactured by the company, which has an international presence and products on stock in Shanghai and Hong Kong, rank among the highest performing thermoplastics. When applied in the automotive industry they help to reduce costs and emissions and to increase efficiency. The VICTREX™ WG™ product family, for example, has been specially tailored to rising customer requirements and – thanks to a lower coefficient of friction and reduced abrasion – it offers efficiency and durability for engine-related applications in increasingly aggressive media. Customers experience further added value through technical support, quality assurance, cost efficiency and short lead times. These were among the reasons that led management consultancy Frost & Sullivan to award Victrex its “European Customer Value Leadership Award 2013”.

Efficient solutions by replacing metal with VICTREX™ PEEK in car manufacturing

“The achievement of higher operating efficiencies is stimulating the metal-to-plastic trend. The trend focuses not only on reducing weight but also on improving strength and corrosion resistance so as to enhance durability, as well as consolidating multiple metal parts into one plastic part to enable overall system cost reductions,” explains Ian Smith, Head of Marketing at Victrex, in the run-up to the show. One example that Victrex will be presenting during Chinaplas (Hall N4, Booth T15) is smoothly running thermoplastic gears: These gears made of VICTREX PEEK are 68% lighter in weight can reduce the moment of inertia by 78%, resulting in efficiency improvements such as 9% lower torque. In addition, noise, vibration and harshness are lowered significantly, with reductions as low as 3dB, which is equivalent to a 50% noise level reduction for the human ear.

Victrex will also be showcasing seals made of VICTREX PEEK. These sealing solutions are used in HPHT environments, bringing great value to the Oil & Gas industry by extending component lifetime, improving reliability and reducing downtime.

Faster and lighter: the aviation industry is also benefiting from tailor-made solutions

Lightweight materials are also in high demand in the aviation industry with the three key goals being reduced costs, weight and emissions. Moreover, longer service intervals or faster component installation and replacement are offering manufacturers competitive advantages. One example is the clips for electric cables. Through use of VICTREX PEEK the clip design can be optimized to such an extent that a 30% faster installation time can be achieved compared to the conventional aluminum fasteners/clips used to date while the component weight can be reduced by 20%. According to ST Namgoong, Commercial Manager Asia Pacific at Victrex: “That clearly represents a key sales argument and is a reason why OEMs and suppliers have already specified many applications with VICTREX PEEK. They also benefit from the fact that a wide variety of products have already been approved by Airbus, Boeing or Comac.” This includes, for example, VICTREX™ PEEK 90HMF40, which allows weight savings of up to 40 percent compared with aluminum. The high-strength polymer features an up to 100-times longer fatigue performance and an up to 20 percent higher specific strength and rigidity, when compared under the same conditions with the aluminum 7075-T6 used in the aviation industry. In addition, for its VICTREX Pipes™ production lines for the manufacture of thin-walled pipes, Victrex recently secured certification for the aerospace industry at its UK production site in accordance with aviation standard AS9100C/ISO 9001, thus achieving a further milestone in the proactive development of efficient and innovative lightweight construction solutions to replace metal.

Apart from their low weight, VICTREX Pipes also feature outstanding chemical resistance. This helps reduce corrosion-related maintenance and operating costs. Further properties which make this high-strength material suitable for use in the aviation industry are its high performance over a wide temperature range as well as its inherent flame retardancy and low smoke and toxic gas emissions. The high-performance VICTREX PEEK thermoplastic is therefore already used in over 15,000 airplanes in demanding applications worldwide. Victrex will be presenting the relevant aviation applications at Chinaplas together with other key products and solutions geared to a wide range of industries. In addition, the world’s leading manufacturer of polyaryletherketones (PAEK) such as VICTREX PEEK with more than 35 years’ experience will be holding two technical seminars on the third day of the trade fair, one to present an overview; a further seminar during the afternoon of the same day will be especially devoted to solutions for the automotive industry.
